Chandler, Arizona (July 2, 2015) – Almost 20 SR1 racers made the trip to Glen Helen Raceway in Devore, CA for rounds 4 and 5 of the Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series – So Cal. Saturday’s race would also be counted as Round 4 of the SR1 Championship Series, where the points battle is really heating up for the top five racers in both series!

This weekend saw several new entries, including FMX superstar Ronnie Faisst, who brought out his newly-aquired SR1 to try his hand at racing, as well as former SR1 racer and current Pro Lite driver Jimmy Fishback, who piloted class founder Jason Weller’s new #10 machine on Sunday. Jason made a rare appearance behind the wheel of his SR1 on Saturday, to get some seat time and to help dial in his car for Fishback to race on Sunday.

“I love racing and I really enjoy driving my SR1”, said Jason Weller. “However, I’m usually pretty busy helping other racers and I feel that it’s somewhat of a conflict of interest for me to really make a run at the points. SR1s are my business, and I really don’t want to blur the lines too much. I like to jump in and race and have fun sometimes, but I also like to give a few other guys the opportunity to get back in and remember how fun these things can be.”

Practice and qualifying started out with quite a bit of excitement, as several SR1s wrecked or suffered mechanical issues, making it a mad scramble to get the vehicles involved fixed and ready to race.

Bryan McCormick blazed out of qualifying on Saturday with the fastest time, with Dustin Nelson almost a second behind him. The inversion kept both racers on the front row for the main, and McCormick quickly grabbed the lead and set the pace. Nelson had some great lines and caught and passed him after a couple of laps, while current champion Corry Weller slowly made her way through the pack from a 7th place starting position. Brandon Kilgore held fast onto third for most of the race, until Weller pushed past him coming out of turn three, and that is how the field would finish on Saturday with Nelson, McCormick and Weller making it onto the podium in that order.

Sunday’s qualifier would see Dustin Nelson with the fastest lap, with McCormick right behind, followed by Kilgore with the 3rd fastest time overall. An inversion of six would put Corry Weller and Robert Distler on the front row, giving both racers clean air when the flag went green.

Weller shot into the lead and began to pull away when a full course caution was called on lap one, which would group the field up again. At the green flag, Weller was only able to hold the lead again for half of a lap, when Nelson got a great drive out of turn four and made the pass. From that point on, it was Nelson, Weller and McCormick in the top three, while battles for the top 10 ensued behind them. Shawn Illingworth showed some great speed as he held off a hard-charging Fishback for fourth, with Fishback having to make his way through the field after getting caught up in an early spinout. When the checkers flew, it was Nelson, Weller and McCormick finishing in the top three and on the podium.

“This class is getting faster every race,” said Corry Weller. “The competition in this class is really, really good, and I think that is what makes it such an attractive class to race in. That, and the fact that these things are so hard to drive, and such a challenge……but, they are pretty easy to maintain and work on. You sort of get the best of both worlds!”

You can see the SR1 class hit the track once again at Glen Helen on August 29, for a race under the lights at Round 6 of the Lucas Oil Regional Series So Cal.
