Hot Laps: Kipp Mickels

Tell us about your racing background and what brought you to the Lucas Oil Regional Series: I started off racing in the desert in 2012 we built a Polaris RZR and started racing BITD. Then shortly after that I also started racing the WORCS short course racing. In between these series I would go to the grand prix races. In 2 of the Worcs races they incorporate the Lucas track in their track and I took a liking to the track. When I had heard that Lucas had a UTV class I decided to go to a race, and from there I was hooked. Then from watching the Pro Lite class “I thought one day I’m gonna’ do that”. An opportunity came my way and I ended up with a pro lite spec truck.

Family and friends play a big role on most regional teams. How important is your family/friends to your success and what roles do each of them play on race weekends? Even though we haven’t been racing very long racing has become a big part of our family’s lives. Not only do I race, but my son in law (Joe Butler) and my grandson (Clayton Mickels) race too. My son in law and I spend hours in the garage wrenching on our cars getting ready for the next one. I have a big support team. As a family we all work together to get everything together for race day. The Ferralotta family is an integral part of the races too (Donny, Kerri, Allissa and Cassie) and I appreciate all their help. They help by bringing cars to the track, spotting, and anything else that is needed. Jim Rivara is also a big help. He is there from start to finish from unloading and setting up to tearing down and loading back up.

You race in both a UTV and a truck. How do you adjust your driving style between the 2 vehicles and is there a vehicle that you like better? Being that I am new to racing the truck, and I race it first, and that I have been racing UTVs long enough the adjustment comes easier. I love racing both vehicles.

What is your advice to someone looking to start out in short course off road racing? Go for it! It is a blast!

What/who is your biggest challenge on the track? My biggest challenge is not getting tangled up with another driver.

Take us through a typical race day at the regional series with your team. How does it work? It starts out a cluster but it always comes together.

Any goals for the next few years and beyond? I am hoping to one day take it to the next level and be able to go national.

We know it takes a lot of support to race and you seem to backed by some great companies. Is there anyone you would like to thank for their support? UTV: Polaris, Walker Evans, Maxxis, Summer Bros, Sunoco fuels, PCI, Kar Tek, Mastercraft Safety, Method Wheels, K & N, Extreme Powder coating, Blackmore signs, impact, event photos, and Lucas Oil.

Pro lite: General Tire, icon shocks, Sunoco fuels, mastercraft safety, Kar Tek, Method Wheels, K & N, Extreme Powdercoating, Summer Bros, McKenzies, PCI, event photos, impact and Lucas Oil
